| May 4, 2010 Province Returns 100 Per Cent of Carbon Tax to Surrey SURREY – The Province has returned $176,948 in carbon tax dollars to the City of Surrey through the Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program. “Surrey has committed to becoming carbon-neutral by 2012,” says Surrey-Tynehead MLA Dave S. Hayer. “A green goal we are happy to support by giving these tax dollars back.” “The incentive program is another way to help local governments like Surrey advance their climate change projects while also meeting other priorities,” says Surrey-Panorama MLA Stephanie Cadieux. “Through collaborations like this, we are reducing B.C.’s carbon footprint.” “This is a great investment back into our community for green initiatives,” says Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon. “With 400 parks and one third of all land agricultural, environmental health is a priority for Surrey. This is an important step towards a greener future.” The Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP) is a conditional grant program that returns 100 per cent of carbon tax costs back to communities who have signed on to the Climate Action Charter, pledging to become carbon-neutral by 2012. The funding announced today represents carbon tax payments made from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2009. The Climate Action Charter is part of the government’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent by 2020 and 80 per cent by 2050.
